“MEMORY LANES” Staged Readings in English, a 2-day international art event of storytelling by theatre & photography, combining stories by Russian-American writer Vladimir Nabokov with photo memories by Portuguese artist Nuno Vieira.
3.11 photo studio at LX factory becomes a dimly-lit magic phototheatre venue where human destinies cross… a Berlin railway station in 1924, a resort town on the Riviera in 1932, a room empty of everything except music.

JA will interlace theatre with the magic of photography to form a triptych of three stories: Nabokov’s first novel, “Maschenka” (“Mary” in English) and two of his short stories – ‘Spring in Fialta’ and ‘Music’
The performance will run over 2 nights.

Night 1, March 16 at 20.00
‘5 Minutes to Midnight’ after ‘Mary’ (1926): A PHOTODIARY reminiscence of youth, love, nostalgia and hopes for seven immigrants living in a tenement house in Berlin and whose longing for a better life becomes urgent in spring. One night Lev Ganin, one of the lodgers, discovers from a photograph that his long-lost first love, Maschenka, is now the wife of his neighbour, and that her train will arrive at Berlin train station 5 days from now…
Running time: 1.30h
Followed by a chat with cast & crew over a complimentary glass of wine

Night 2, March 17 at 17.00
‘Spring in Fialta’ (1936)
Victor and Nina are two Russian expatriates who have an off-and-on affair over the course of fifteen years between 1917 and 1932 and who meet – for the last time – in a seaside resort called Fialta…
`MUSIC` (1932)
One evening, in the drawing room of a society hostess, the sudden, unexpected sight of the woman he loved, together with the sound of a piano, send a man tumbling down memory lane. How will she react? How will memory affect her?
Running time: 2h with an intermission

“MEMORY CAN RESTORE TO LIFE EVERYTHING EXCEPT SMELLS, ALTHOUGH NOTHING REVIVES THE PAST SO COMPLETELY AS A SMELL THAT WAS ONCE ASSOCIATED WITH IT” VLADIMIR NABOKOV.
