Hamlet – Out of Joint
Companhia de Dança Contemporânea de Évora (CDCE) – Évora
In ‘Hamlet – Out of Joint’, a creation by Nélia Pinheiro premiering in 2024, the tormented prince from Shakespeare’s tragedy is played by dancer Gonçalo Almeida Andrade.
Nélia Pinheiro’s new creation, with script and artistic accompaniment by the Já founder Suresh Nampuri, transcends Shakespeare’s words and dives into the realm of raw emotions and existential anguish. On stage, Gonçalo Almeida Andrade embodies Hamlet’s duality, exploring his internal struggle between revenge and conscience, madness and sanity.
The set design, costumes, subtly dramatic lighting and sound composition all contribute to the creation of an intense stage atmosphere. The audience is invited to immerse themselves in the solitary journey of a man who questions existence, morality and purpose, capturing the timeless essence of Shakespeare’s work in a contemporary way.
